Softail Standard FXST/FXSTI (2001): "Classically and Conservatively Styled So That Owners Can Customize From Mild to Wild"
Harley's own confirmed dealer copy for this exact model sums up its genuine purpose directly: "Harley-Davidson's Softail Standard is classically and conservatively styled so that owners can customize from mild to wild. At its heart is the new Twin Cam 88 counterbalanced engine, filled with smooth power. Underneath is the Softail suspension which provides the clean lines of a hardtail. Classic laced wheels, a custom seat, and a wide handlebar give the Softail Standard an authentic look that's just the starting point for many owners."
Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 88B, an air-cooled 1,449-1,450cc V-twin, a 95.3mm x 101.6mm bore and stroke, and an 8.5-8.9:1 compression ratio (sources vary slightly), delivering a claimed 62.5-63 hp (46-47 kW) at 5,300 rpm and roughly 78.2 lb-ft (106 Nm) of torque at 3,200 rpm, fed by either a 40mm constant-velocity carburetor (FXST) or Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (FXSTI), through a 5-speed manual transmission with belt final drive.
Standard equipment included a silver powder-coated engine, hard-tail styling with hidden horizontal rear shocks, laced wheels, a black horseshoe oil tank, and a bobtail fender — genuinely the most basic, customization-ready Softail platform in Harley's 2001 lineup, deliberately left minimal to give owners a clean canvas to personalize. Braking used a single 292mm disc at each wheel, both with 4-piston calipers, riding on an 80/90-21 or MH90-21 front tire and 130/90-16 rear tire.
Confirmed factory dimensions list a 95.0-inch length, a 26.1-27.4-inch seat height depending on source, 5.6 inches of ground clearance, and a 66.8-66.9-inch wheelbase. Fuel capacity comes in at 5.0 gallons (18.9 litres), with dry weight at 628-672 lbs depending on fuel-system configuration.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001 Softail Standard FXST/FXSTI running the way it was built to.
