Harley Davidson FXST FXSTI Softail Standard 2000 Service Manual

Harley's own line for the Softail Standard is that it's "classically and conservatively styled so owners can customize from mild to wild." The 2000 model year was the first time the Softail range ran a Twin Cam engine, and Hot Bike's riding impression says that engine and the new Softail chassis are "what you get for that money." The engine was finished in an aluminum-look powder-coat that mimics bead-blasted bare metal and wipes clean of road grime. The oil tank was black rather than chrome, with new chromed oil lines. Like the other 2000 Softails, the Standard also got a new one-piece fuel tank designed to look like the traditional twin-tank layout.

Power comes from the air-cooled, counter-balanced Twin Cam 88B, a 1,449cc V-twin with two valves per cylinder and a 95.3 x 101.6mm bore and stroke. It makes a claimed 63 hp at 5,300 rpm and 106 Nm (78.2 lb-ft) of torque at 3,200 rpm through a 5-speed transmission. Twin contra-rotating balancers give it a smoothness Hot Bike credited for the bike's crisp response to the throttle. Harley also lightened the shift drum and added a positive stop to prevent over-rotation, which Hot Bike said "clicks rather than clangs" into the next gear.

The bike has the hidden-shock hardtail look, laced wheels, a custom seat, a wide handlebar and a raked front fork. Confirmed figures list a single 292mm disc at each wheel, a 25.3-inch seat height, a 66.8-inch wheelbase, an 18.9-litre tank including a 1.9-litre reserve, and a dry weight of about 305kg (672 lbs).
