Softail Breakout FXSB (2014): The Fat-Rear-Tire Chopper with Chopped Fenders and Drag Bars

The Breakout is Harley’s factory chopper-style Softail. The look is built on a massive 18-inch, 240mm rear tire, visually balanced by thick forks and chopped fenders, with a shaved tank console and drag handlebar to keep the profile low. The Twin Cam 103B powertrain has a black powder-coat finish with chrome covers, and the bike has a gloss black single-rib cast aluminum oil tank, a 1.25-inch gloss black drag-style handlebar on a pull-back riser, a four-inch riser-mounted speedometer and glass-filled fuel tank medallions. The 2014 US MSRP was $18,499.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counterbalanced Twin Cam 103B, an air-cooled 1,690cc V-twin with a 98.4mm x 111.1mm bore and stroke and a 9.6:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Torque is about 99.5 lb-ft (134 Nm) at 3,000 rpm. The gearbox is a 6-speed with a chain primary (34/46 ratio) and belt final drive.

The chassis is a mild-steel tubular frame with a 41.3mm telescopic fork (143mm of travel) and hidden, horizontal coil-over rear shocks (91mm of travel). Brakes are a single 292mm disc at each end, with a four-piston caliper at the front and a two-piston caliper at the rear. Tires are a 130/60B21 front and a 240/40R18 rear. Geometry is a 35-degree rake with 145mm (5.7 inches) of trail.

Confirmed figures list a 2,445mm (96.3-inch) length, a 1,710mm (67.3-inch) wheelbase and 120mm of ground clearance. Seat height is 24 inches laden and 26.1 inches unladen. Dry weight is about 294 kg (648 lbs), or about 306 kg wet, and the tank holds 5 gallons.
