Low Rider S Returns for 2020: Softail Chassis, Dyna-Inspired Attitude
The Low Rider S name has a complicated but storied history: it first appeared as a Dyna model in 2016, was axed when Harley discontinued the entire Dyna line in 2017, then came back for 2020 as an all-new Softail-based machine built to carry the same aggressive, blacked-out spirit. The lineage stretches further back too — the original FXS Low Rider debuted in 1977 and is widely credited as the first true "factory custom," a category Harley basically invented.
This 2020 relaunch runs the Milwaukee-Eight 114, rigid-mounted with dual internal counter-balancers, making a claimed 119 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm through 4.016 in. bore and 4.5 in. stroke on a 10.5:1 compression ratio. A gloss black Ventilator air intake and 2-into-2 offset shotgun mufflers round out the induction and exhaust, feeding through electronic sequential port fuel injection. Compared to the standard Low Rider, frame rake is tightened to 28 degrees from 30, and an inverted single-cartridge front fork stiffens steering response while dual front discs replace the standard model's single-disc setup.
Styling leans hard into the coastal-custom roots of the original '80s Low Riders: a one-inch motocross-style handlebar on 4-inch risers, a color-matched mini fairing, and a solo seat, with every bright finish swapped for black. Dimensions run 92.7 in. long with a 63.6 in. wheelbase and 26.5 in. laden seat height, riding on a 110/90B19 front tire. 2020 pricing started at $17,999 in Vivid Black or Barracuda Silver — the only two colors offered that first year back.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2020 Low Rider S running the way it was built to.
