Low Rider (2018): The Bridge That Kept a Dyna Icon Alive on Softail Bones

The FXLR's importance isn't that it was the wildest Softail of 2018 — it's that it was the bridge model, the bike that proved Harley could keep the Low Rider name alive after the Dyna platform disappeared entirely that year. Ultimate Motorcycling's own buyer's guide didn't hedge on the result: "an improved motorcycle in every way," with styling cues from the Dyna days carrying over faithfully despite the wholesale chassis swap underneath.

The Milwaukee-Eight 107 is tuned specifically for torque in this application, delivering a claimed 110 lb-ft at just 3,000 rpm through a 6-speed gearbox with belt final drive. Unlike the outgoing Dyna Low Rider's rubber-mounted engine, the FXLR runs the Milwaukee-Eight solid-mounted with internal counterbalancing — a genuinely different feel underneath the rider, delivered through the all-new 2018 Softail frame's hidden rear monoshock in place of the old visible twin-shock arrangement.

The roomy wheelbase and relaxed rake carried over from the Dyna-era Low Rider, yet the bike handles noticeably better than its predecessor thanks to the stiffer chassis and upgraded suspension underneath. Styling stays true to '70s Low Rider roots: dual tank-mounted gauges, a distinctive headlight visor, and a new LED headlight that modernizes the look without abandoning the classic profile. Front and rear tires run 110/90-19 and 180/70B-16.
