Softail Rocker FXCW (2009): Hard-Tail Chopper Style with the Lowest Seat in the Harley Lineup

Harley's pitch for the Rocker is authentic hard-tail chopper style. Its signature is the Rockertail rear section, which mounts a wide fender directly to the swingarm just an inch over a big 240mm x 18-inch rear tire. The fender and wheel move up and down together through 3.4 inches of rear suspension travel. A solo seat sits just 24.5 inches off the ground, among the lowest of any motorcycle on sale, and Harley counted it as its lowest seat height. The 2009 bike uses a monochromatic silver stainless-steel powder-coat scheme.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B, an air-cooled 1,584cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and hydraulic self-adjusting lifters. It has a 95.3 x 111.1mm bore and stroke and a 9.2:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Claimed torque is roughly 117-125 Nm (86-92 lb-ft), depending on the source. The gearbox is a 6-speed Cruise Drive with a 9-plate wet clutch, a 34/46 chain primary and a 32/66 belt final drive. The engine is silver powder-coated with satin stainless covers, and the exhaust is a chrome shorty dual.

The styling is stripped and aggressive. It has a stretched low-profile painted tank console, a finned cast-aluminum horseshoe oil tank with chrome external oil lines, a fire-truck-inspired bullet headlamp and bullet-style LED turn signals. A stainless pull-back handlebar sits on adjustable V-bar risers, with forward-mounted rider footpegs. The wheels are satin stainless tapered five-spoke cast aluminum, 19 inches at the front and 18 at the rear, with a 90/90-19 front tire and a 240/40R18 rear.

The chassis is a mild-steel tubular frame with a 49mm telescopic fork and a hidden horizontal coil-over rear shock, with a single disc at each wheel. Confirmed dimensions list a 95-inch length, a 69.2-inch wheelbase, a 36-degree rake with 6.2 inches of trail and a single-seat 24.5-inch seat height. The tank holds 5 gallons, and weight is about 661 lbs. Parts data lists a 133-tooth 20mm drive belt, a DCPR6E spark plug and a YTX20HL-BS battery. The US price started at $17,399.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2009 Softail Rocker FXCW running the way it was built to.
