Softail Rocker (2008): The "Slammed Hardtail" Illusion Engineered From Scratch
Harley's launch announcement made the engineering brief explicit: "a slammed hardtail look for the Harley-Davidson Softail platform." Introduced fresh for 2008, the FXCW Rocker and its C-trim sibling were built around an all-new Rockertail rear section that faithfully reproduces the profile of a genuinely slammed, hardtail frame while still delivering the smooth, comfortable ride of a modern Softail suspension underneath — one of seven distinct Softail branches Harley offered that year.
Power comes from the rigid-mounted, internally balanced 1,584cc Twin Cam 96B, delivering a claimed 86.3 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm through a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission. A silver powder-coated engine with Satin Stainless Metallic covers pairs with a chrome shorty dual exhaust featuring a new slash-bend design, giving the Rocker a genuinely different finish palette than the more heavily blacked-out Night Train sharing the Softail lineup that year.
Styling leans into a genuinely radical, drag-inspired stance: a stretched fuel tank with a recessed medallion, a solo saddle, V-bar handlebars mounted on 5-inch curved risers, and a console-mounted Speed Shop speedometer. Satin Stainless Metallic powder-coat extends across the fork lowers, oil tank, headlamp bucket, and swingarm, with a finned cast-aluminum horseshoe oil tank adding further custom detailing. Cast-aluminum tapered five-spoke wheels run a 19-inch front and 18-inch rear, wrapped in a massive 240mm rear tire against a 90mm front. Dry weight sits at 660.9 lbs. 2008 pricing started at $17,295.
