Breakout 117 (2025): New "Custom" Engine Tune Anchors the "Year of the Softail"
2025 marked what Harley itself called the "Year of the Softail" — all eight cruisers in the lineup got substantial updates, and the Breakout's headline change was an all-new Milwaukee-Eight 117 Custom engine tune, up from the 2024 model's Heavy Breather-equipped 117. Motorcycle.com's first-ride review found the result genuinely potent: a claimed 104 hp at 4,800 rpm and 126 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm, ready to "slingshot you from light to light."
The reworked 117 gets new four-valve cylinder heads, a new throttle body, and a contoured aluminum intake manifold, feeding through a Touring-style intake airbox with 50% more volume than the previous Heavy Breather setup, paired with a revised two-into-two exhaust and muffler design engineered specifically to reduce high-frequency noise while letting the engine's lower-frequency rumble dominate. Dealer copy for the 2025 model notes torque stays strong across a broad curve, with particularly good output in the midrange and low end when Sport ride mode is engaged.
Styling stays true to the Breakout's raked-out chopper DNA: a 34-degree steering-head rake, a massive 240mm rear tire on a 240/40R18 wheel, a 130/60B21 front tire, and a bobtail rear fender, riding on Michelin Scorcher 11 rubber front and rear. Motorcyclist's testing found genuinely improved suspension for 2025 alongside the added power and new ride modes — a real step forward from a bike that's spent years leaning purely on styling. Dimensions run 93.3 in. long with a 66.7-inch wheelbase and 26.2-inch unladen seat height, with the bike shipping at 653 lbs (683 lbs in running order) and a 5-gallon tank. 2025 colors included Billiard Gray, Vivid Black, Centerline Yellow, Brilliant Red, and Midnight Firestorm, with pricing starting at $23,099.
