Harley Davidson FLSTS Softail Heritage Springer 2000 Service Manual

Harley's own description says the Heritage Springer's front end is modeled after the 1948 Panhead, with an exposed spring suspension, a full floating fender and a classic horn. Classic tooled leather, crossover exhaust pipes with dual fishtail mufflers, fringed saddlebags, a tombstone taillight and whitewall tires round out the retro package. For 2000 the engine underneath was new: the Twin Cam 88 Counterbalanced, which Harley called "a unique blend of old and new technology." This was the first year the Softail range ran the Twin Cam.

Power comes from the air-cooled Twin Cam 88B, a 1,449cc V-twin with two valves per cylinder and a 95.3 x 101.6mm bore and stroke. It makes a claimed 63 hp at 5,500 rpm and 110 Nm (81.1 lb-ft) of torque at 2,800 rpm through a 5-speed transmission. The "B" marks the balance shafts, needed because the Softail's engine is rigidly mounted in the frame.

Confirmed figures list a 130/90-16 tire at both ends, a single 292mm disc at each wheel (a two-piston caliper at the front and a four-piston at the rear), a 25.9-inch seat height, and a 64.2-inch wheelbase. The tank holds 18.9 litres including a 1.9-litre reserve, and dry weight is about 340kg (750 lbs), the heaviest of the 2000 Softails covered here. A quick-detach windshield and passenger pegs are common on surviving examples.

Early Twin Cam engines have a known inspection point in the cam chain tensioner system, so check the service history on any bike.
