Softail Heritage Springer FLSTS/FLSTSI (2001): Only 1,857 Built That Year — "A Blend of New Technology and Classic Styling"
A real surviving 2001 example documented by National Powersports confirms the genuine rarity of this exact model year: "Harley only made 1,857 of these bikes in 2001, so you don't see too many of them on the road." Harley's own confirmed dealer copy for this exact model year describes the styling directly: "harkening back to the 1940s Harley-Davidson Panheads, this model's front end boasts an exposed spring suspension, full floating fender and classic horn... at the center of it all is the powerful performance of the new Twin Cam 88B engine, giving the Heritage Springer model a blend of new technology and classic styling."
Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 88B, an air-cooled 1,449cc V-twin, a 95.3mm x 101.6mm bore and stroke, and an 8.9-9.2:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 66.5-67 hp (49-50 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 110 Nm (81.1 lb-ft) of torque at 2,800 rpm, fed by either a carburetor (FLSTS) or Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (FLSTSI), through a 5-speed wet multi-disc manual transmission with belt final drive.
Standard equipment included chrome Springer front forks, a full floating front fender with running light, leather saddlebags with quick-detach buckles, fishtail mufflers, fat whitewall tires, a tombstone taillight, a passenger pillion with a chrome hand rail, and laced wheels — genuine period-correct 1940s detailing layered onto thoroughly modern Twin Cam mechanicals. Braking used a single 292mm front disc with a 2-piston caliper and a single 292mm rear disc with a 4-piston caliper, riding on 130/90-16 tires front and rear.
Confirmed factory dimensions list a 94.1-inch length, a 25.9-inch seat height, 4.9 inches of ground clearance, and a 64.2-inch wheelbase. Fuel capacity comes in at 5.0 gallons, with dry weight ranging 716-749 lbs depending on fuel-system configuration and exact source.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001 Softail Heritage Springer FLSTS/FLSTSI running the way it was built to.
