Softail Deluxe FLSTN (2017): "Many People's Idea of Exactly What a Motorcycle Should Look Like" — And the Final Year the Deluxe Wore Whitewalls and Triple Headlights

Ultimate Motorcycling's own review doesn't hedge on this bike's genuine styling credentials: "there may not be another more classically styled motorcycle from The Motor Company than the 2017 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe. With deep-valanced fenders, whitewall tires, a prominent saddle, triple headlights, tombstone taillight, and lots of chrome, the Softail Deluxe is many people's idea of exactly what a motorcycle should look like."

Power comes from the High Output Twin Cam 103B, a 1,690cc (103.13 cu.in) air-cooled V-twin, a 3.87-inch bore and 4.374-inch stroke, a 9.6:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 100.3 lb-ft of torque, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection through a 6-speed Cruise Drive manual transmission with belt final drive and a 34/46 chain primary ratio. Ultimate Motorcycling's own review confirms the genuine sound and standard equipment: "the over/under shotgun exhaust sounds as good as the Softail Classic looks... has modern standard features, including the High Output Twin Cam 103B motor, ABS, and cruise control."

Dennis Kirk's own confirmed spec sheet lists steel laced wheels wrapped in MT90HB-16 front and MU85HB-16 rear tires (an optional chrome aluminum profile laced wheel was also available), a 41mm fork, and a 133-tooth drive belt. Black Sheep HD's own confirmed dimensions list a 94.9-inch length and 701 lbs dry weight, with a 5.0-gallon fuel tank.

This 2017 model year represents the last full production year of the FLSTN Deluxe on the original dual-shock Softail chassis and Twin Cam engine — Harley's 2018 Softail redesign genuinely dropped the Deluxe from the lineup entirely at first (the model didn't return until several years later, badged FLDE on the new single-shock platform with the Milwaukee-Eight engine), making this exact 2017 configuration the true end of an era for the classic chrome-and-whitewall Deluxe formula.
