Harley Davidson FLSTN Softail Deluxe 2012 Service Manual

Harley changed very little of the Deluxe's look for 2012, and that was the point. It kept the extremely low seat with "collapsing sides," the pull-back bar on risers, a clean front light bar, a tombstone taillight, a chrome grab rail and luggage rack, and long-lined fenders with chrome tips. What did change was under the tank: the Deluxe moved to the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 103B, replacing the 96 it had run before.

Power comes from the air-cooled Twin Cam 103B, a 1,690cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves, hydraulic self-adjusting lifters and Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection, delivering a claimed 98.7 lb-ft (134 Nm) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Drive runs through a chain primary (34/46 ratio) and a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission with belt final drive (32/66 ratio). The powertrain wears black powder-coat with chrome covers and a chrome over/under shotgun exhaust.

New for 2012 was an optional tubeless Chrome Aluminum Profile Laced wheel, which makes tire changes and repairs simpler than on the standard chrome laced steel wheels. Standard equipment also included wide whitewall tires (MU85B-16 rear), a chrome seven-inch ball headlamp, a chrome horseshoe oil tank, a nostalgic tank console with electronic speedometer, full-length rider footboards, a fuel tank sender for accurate fuel-level readings, and a five-gallon fuel tank. A Security Package option added the Smart Security System and ABS.

The frame is a mild-steel tubular design with a rectangular-section backbone, with a single front disc and four-piston caliper. Confirmed figures list a 315kg (695 lb) dry weight, a 1,638mm wheelbase and a 622mm laden seat height. The electrical system is a three-phase 38-amp charging setup (489W max) feeding a sealed 12V, 19Ah battery.

Early-build 2012 Softails, including the FLSTN, were part of a recall for possible corrosion of the front brake master cylinder banjo bolt threads. It's worth checking that the free remedy was carried out on any example built between August 2011 and February 2012.
