The big change for 2009 is the rider seat. It's redesigned with a narrow profile and collapsible pockets in the shell, so the seat gets narrower when you straddle the bike at rest. Together with a lowered suspension, a pull-back handlebar on risers and an extended kickstand, it puts the laden seat height at 24.5 inches, among the lowest on a full-size Harley. New colours this year were Flame Blue Pearl and Red Hot Sunglo, alongside Vivid Black, Black Denim and several two-tones.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B, an air-cooled 1,584cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and hydraulic self-adjusting lifters. It has a 3.75 x 4.38 inch (95.25 x 111.25mm) bore and stroke and a 9.2:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Claimed torque is about 122 Nm (roughly 90 lb-ft) at 2,750 rpm. The gearbox is a 6-speed Cruise Drive with a 9-plate wet clutch, chain primary and belt final drive. The exhaust is a chrome over/under shotgun.

The frame is a mild-steel tubular design with a rectangular-section backbone, with a 41.3mm telescopic fork with chrome dust covers and a hidden horizontal coil-over rear shock. Brakes are a single 292mm disc at each wheel, with a four-piston front caliper and a two-piston rear. The bike rides on chrome laced steel wheels with wide whitewall tires, an MT90-16 front and an MU85-B16 rear, and has a tombstone taillight, a chrome luggage rack and full-coverage fenders.

Confirmed dimensions list a 94.7-inch length, a 64.5-inch wheelbase, a 32-degree rake with 5.8 inches of trail and 4.8 inches of ground clearance. Seat height is 24.5 inches laden and 25.9 inches unladen. The tank holds 5 gallons and oil capacity is 3.5 quarts. Weight is 695 lbs as shipped and 724 lbs in running order. Parts data lists a 133-tooth, 1-inch drive belt on 32/66 pulleys, an RA8HC spark plug, an H30292 oil filter and a YTX20HL-BS battery.

The helical-cut fifth gear and the new fuel tank sender arrived for 2010, so a 2009 bike runs the earlier versions of both.
