Harley Davidson FLSTFB Softail Fat Boy Lo 2012 Service Manual

Harley's own description of the Lo is direct: to give it a distinctive road-hugging stance, both the front and rear suspension were dropped 1.15 inches. That gave it a 24.25-inch laden seat, the lowest of any stock Harley at the time. The 2012 model kept the blacked-out look: black fuel tank, fenders, fork covers, frame and engine covers, with brushed-finish mufflers, polished head covers and fins, and bullet-hole disc wheels in black with polished rims.

2012 was a big year for the Fat Boy family. The Lo moved up to the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 103B, an air-cooled 1,690cc V-twin with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection, delivering a claimed 98.7 lb-ft (134 Nm) of torque through a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission with belt final drive. Both the Fat Boy and Fat Boy Lo also got a new reduced-reach, internally wired 1.25-inch handlebar and a lower, narrower seat that puts the rider "in the bike." In some European markets this same model was sold as the Fat Boy Special.

Confirmed figures list a 31.6-degree rake with 147mm of trail, a 1,630mm wheelbase, and 125mm of ground clearance. It rolls on 140/75R17 front and 200/55R17 rear tires. The fuel tank holds 18.9 litres, engine oil capacity is 3.3 litres with the filter, and weight is 313kg as shipped (330kg ready to ride). US pricing started at $16,649 in Vivid Black, with the optional Security Package adding ABS and the Smart Security System.

Early-build 2012 Softails, including the FLSTFB and FLSTFB103 codes, were part of a recall for possible corrosion of the front brake master cylinder banjo bolt threads. It's worth checking that the free remedy was done on any example built between August 2011 and February 2012.
