Softail Fat Boy FLSTF (2014): “The Original Fat Custom Icon”

Harley’s own line on the Fat Boy is that it’s the original fat custom icon, with a burly style that’s often imitated but never duplicated, and that it’s one of the quintessential cruisers. The look is built on 17-inch Mirror Chrome bullet-hole disc wheels in cast aluminum, with a fat 140mm tire at the front and a beefy 200mm tire at the rear. It has the FL-style fork with the headlight nacelle, a Fat Bob fuel tank, a solid-disc look and a heel-toe shifter. A Fat Boy Lo (FLSTFB) version with a blacked-out frame, swingarm and fork lowers and a seat height of 24.3 inches was sold alongside it. 2014 colours included Vivid Black, Brilliant Silver Pearl and Amber Whisky.

Power comes from the air-cooled Twin Cam 103B, a counterbalanced 1,690cc V-twin with a 98.4mm x 111.1mm bore and stroke and a 9.6:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Torque is about 97.4 lb-ft (132 Nm) at 3,000 rpm. The gearbox is a 6-speed Cruise Drive, with gear ratios of 9.311, 6.454, 4.793, 3.882, 3.307 and 2.79 overall, and belt final drive. Harley’s fuel economy figure is about 42 mpg.

Tires are Dunlop Harley-Davidson Series, with a 140mm front and a 200mm rear. The bike has hidden, horizontal-mounted rear shocks and a 5-gallon tank. The Lo version’s weights are about 700 lbs dry and 731 lbs in running order, and the standard Fat Boy is close to that.
