Softail Fat Boy FLSTF (2011): A Bigger Odometer, a New ABS Option, and a Powerband Ultimate Motorcycling Called "Extremely Wide"

Harley's own description of the Fat Boy hasn't changed much in decades: fat tires, fat bars, a fat fender, and a big black powder-coated, counter-balanced engine. For 2011 the changes were practical. The odometer readout got bigger and showed more information, including gear and RPM, and a new Security Package option added the Anti-lock Braking System and the Smart Security System.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B, an air-cooled 1,584cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves, hydraulic self-adjusting lifters, and Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. It uses a 3.75 x 4.38 inch bore and stroke with a 9.2:1 compression ratio and makes a claimed 127 Nm (93.7 lb-ft) of torque at 3,000 rpm. A chain primary drive (34/46 ratio) feeds a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission with belt final drive, with overall gear ratios running from 9.31 in first to 2.79 in sixth. Ultimate Motorcycling's tester described a very wide powerband, with plenty of torque on tap wherever you are in the rev range, and said the bike responds to the rider "without much thought."

Confirmed figures list a 94.3-inch overall length, a 64.5-inch wheelbase, 5.1 inches of ground clearance, and a 31-degree rake with 5.8 inches of trail. The seat sits just over 25 inches high with a rider aboard, and the front of the seat is cut away so a rider can move their thighs down at a stop. It carries 5 gallons of fuel and 3.5 quarts of oil, and weighs 694 lbs as shipped. US pricing started at $15,999 in Vivid Black.

This 1,584cc Twin Cam 96B configuration ran through 2011. For 2012 Harley moved the Fat Boy to the Twin Cam 103B.
