Softail Fat Boy FLSTF (2009): "A Size and Stature Second to None" on the Twin Cam 96B

Harley describes the Fat Boy as one of the world's most distinctive motorcycles, rolling with a size and stature second to none. It rides wide on a 200mm rear tire and a 17-inch front wheel, with a bright chrome fork nacelle. The styling is the formula it has used since 1990: FL front forks with a custom front fender, a large chrome headlight, a five-gallon Fat Bob fuel tank with a laced triple bullet strap, full-length floorboards with a heel/toe shift lever and silver bullet-hole disc wheels. Polished and chrome bullet-hole disc cast aluminum wheels were optional.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B, an air-cooled 1,584cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and hydraulic self-adjusting lifters. It has a 3.75 x 4.38 inch (95.25 x 111.25mm) bore and stroke and a 9.2:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Claimed torque is 89.8 lb-ft (121.8 Nm) at 2,750 rpm. The gearbox is a 6-speed Cruise Drive with a 9-plate wet clutch, a 34/46 chain primary and a 32/66 belt final drive. Fuel economy is rated at 35 mpg city and 54 mpg highway.

Brakes are a single disc at each wheel, with a four-piston front caliper and a two-piston floating rear. Tires are a 140/75R17 front and a 200/55R17 rear. An optional Smart Security System was available.

Confirmed dimensions list a 94.3-inch length, a 64.5-inch wheelbase, a 31-degree rake with 5.8 inches of trail and 5.1 inches of ground clearance. Seat height is 25.4 inches laden and 27.5 inches unladen. The tank holds 5 gallons and oil capacity is 3.5 quarts. Weight is 694 lbs as shipped and about 714 lbs wet, and the US price started at $15,999.

The new fuel tank sender and the helical-cut fifth gear arrived for 2010, so a 2009 bike runs the earlier versions of both.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2009 Softail Fat Boy FLSTF running the way it was built to.
