Softail Fat Boy FLSTF (1999): The Last Evolution Fat Boy, with Solid Disc Wheels and a 56 hp Carbureted Engine

The Fat Boy has been in the Softail line since 1990, and 1999 is its final year on the 1,340cc Evolution engine. The Twin Cam 88B Fat Boy followed for 2000. It's the Softail that most people picture: fat FL front forks, a wide front end, solid disc wheels, a large headlight and plenty of chrome. Dealers and collectors market the 1999 bike as the last Evo Fat Boy.

Power comes from the air-cooled 1,340cc (about 1,338cc, 82 cu in) Evolution V-twin, with pushrod-operated overhead valves, a single cam and two valves per cylinder. Its bore and stroke are 88.8mm x 108mm. It is carbureted and it makes about 56 hp at 5,000 rpm and about 97 Nm (71 lb-ft) of torque at 2,350 rpm. The gearbox is a 5-speed with belt final drive. The engine is the same unit as the rest of the Evolution Softail family.

Confirmed figures list a seat height of about 26.8 inches. Weight is about 298 kg (657 lbs) dry and 320 kg (705 lbs) in running order, though one US listing quotes 684 lbs dry. As with all the Softails, hidden rear shocks give the look of a hardtail.

Because 1999 is the last Evolution Fat Boy, its engine, carburetor and electrical parts won't fit the 2000-and-later Twin Cam 88B Fat Boy. Check the VIN before ordering parts.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1999 Softail Fat Boy FLSTF running the way it was built to.
