Softail Fat Boy FLSTF/FLSTFI (2001): A Genuine Oiling-System Upgrade — "Critical Engine Components Receive Cleaner Oil"

A real confirmed dealer listing for this exact model year flags a genuine mechanical improvement that applied across Harley's whole 2001 range, including the Fat Boy: "one improvement not limited to the Softail series involves a change to the oil system. All 2001-model Harley-Davidson motorcycles filter their oil prior to entering the engine, rather than upon leaving the engine enroute to the remote oil tank, meaning critical engine components receive cleaner oil." Harley's own confirmed dealer copy sums up the whole bike's character directly: "the Fat Boy is deserving of its name especially now that it's powered by the Twin Cam 88B engine. There's nothing skinny about this machine: fat FL forks, a black and chrome engine treatment, shotgun exhaust, full-sized floor boards, and broad handlebars make people notice this bike in a crowd."

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 88B, an air-cooled 1,449-1,450cc V-twin, a 95.3mm x 101.6mm bore and stroke, and an 8.9:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 63 hp (47 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 106 Nm (78.2 lb-ft) of torque at 3,200 rpm, fed by either a 40mm constant-velocity carburetor with enrichener and accelerator pump (FLSTF) or 38mm-throttle-bore Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (FLSTFI), through a 5-speed wet 9-plate clutch manual transmission with chain primary drive (36/25 ratio) and belt final drive.

Standard equipment included fat FL front forks, solid disc front and rear wheels, fat tires, floorboards, an FL rear fender, a large headlight with fork nacelle, a 7-inch chrome headlamp, a textured leather seat insert, and a hand-laced leather tank panel. Braking used a single 292mm disc at each wheel, both with 4-piston calipers, riding on 130/90-16 tires front and rear.

Confirmed factory dimensions list a 94.3-inch length, a 25.4-26.5-inch seat height, 5.1 inches of ground clearance, a 32-degree rake with 5.8 inches of trail, and a 64.5-inch wheelbase. Fuel capacity comes in at 5.0 gallons (18.9 litres), with dry weight ranging 665-705.5 lbs depending on fuel-system configuration. 2001 US pricing started at $8,495.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001 Softail Fat Boy FLSTF/FLSTFI running the way it was built to.
