Softail Fat Boy FLSTF (2000): The Year It Got the Counterbalanced "Fathead" Twin Cam 88

Harley's own copy for 2000 says that at 650 pounds the Fat Boy "is deserving of its name," now that it's powered by the counterbalanced "Fathead" Twin Cam 88. Cycle World's road test noted that the smooth idle "is directly related to its new engine," the Twin Cam "Beta." The bike moved up from the 1,340cc Evolution engine, which had powered the Fat Boy since 1990, to the 1,449cc Twin Cam 88B, and Harley changed the frame to carry the larger engine.

Power comes from the air-cooled Twin Cam 88B, a 1,449cc V-twin with two valves per cylinder and a 95.3 x 101.6mm bore and stroke. It makes a claimed 63 hp at 5,200 rpm and 106 Nm (78.2 lb-ft) of torque at 3,200 rpm through a 5-speed transmission with belt final drive. The engine gets a chrome-and-black treatment and a newly designed shotgun dual exhaust.

The look stayed classic Fat Boy: fat FL-style forks with beer can covers, a 7-inch chrome headlamp, a new rear fender, a textured leather seat insert, a hand-laced leather tank panel, and full-sized floorboards on solid disc wheels. Autoevolution lists 130mm of front wheel travel from the 41mm fork. Confirmed specs list a 130/90-16 tire at both ends and a single 292mm disc with a four-piston caliper at each wheel.

The 2000 Fat Boy was the first Twin Cam Fat Boy, and it kept this engine family through 2017 before the 2018 redesign renamed the model FLFB and FLFBS. Early Twin Cam engines have a known inspection point in the cam chain tensioner system, so check the service history.
