Heritage Softail Classic FLSTC (2012): The Year Harley Moved the Whole Softail Line to the 103 and Made ABS and Security Available
This exact 2012 model year moved the Heritage Softail Classic up to Harley's bigger Twin Cam 103B engine alongside the rest of the Softail range, replacing the Twin Cam 96 that powered the model the year before. A real owner who stepped up from a 2011 to this 2012 version and had previously owned a 98 Fat Boy, a 99 Heritage, and a 02 Heritage confirmed the difference directly: the new Heritage "handles like a dream," with plenty of torque and passing power right out of the box.
Power comes from the Twin Cam 103B, an air-cooled 1,690cc V-twin, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), delivering a claimed 96.9-98 lb-ft (131.4 Nm) of torque at 3,000 rpm through a 6-speed transmission with belt final drive. This bike came with a genuinely useful option in this exact year: a factory-installed ABS and security package, praised by owners as a real difference-maker that Harley managed to integrate into the bike so cleanly you can't even see the system.
Standard equipment carried the Heritage's signature touring-cruiser formula: laced wheels with whitewall tires, studded leather saddlebags with hidden quick-detach buckles, a quick-release windshield for colder days, a sissy bar with luggage rack, and a distinctive glass-inlayed, cloisonné-and-chrome tank medallion showing the Softail heritage. Real owners consistently noted that the standard bags and windshield made it more capable of longer rides and overnight runs than the Fat Boy it's often compared to.
