Heritage Softail Classic FLSTC (2011): "A True Custom-Touring Bike" With a Windshield That Comes Off in Seconds

Rider Magazine's road test asks the question directly: is this a genuine touring motorcycle? Its answer was "You bet it is." It has weather protection in a windscreen, carrying capacity in saddlebags, and comfort from a well-padded saddle with a passenger backrest as standard. The big fork with Harley's "beer can" covers gives 5 inches of travel, and the twin shocks hidden beneath the engine give 4.3 inches at the rear. Harley's own copy adds that the quick-release Lexan windshield allows quick conversion to custom cruising.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B, an air-cooled 1,584cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves, hydraulic self-adjusting lifters, and Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. It uses a 3.75 x 4.38 inch bore and stroke and makes a claimed 127 Nm (roughly 93 lb-ft) of torque at 3,000 rpm through a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission with belt final drive. Rider's tester found plenty of power to cross a 4,050-foot summit at a relaxed 75 mph, and called the balanced engine just as smooth as its reputation.

The Heritage carries authentic nostalgic detail: a horseshoe oil tank, a full front fender, laced wheels, and optional Chrome Profile Laced Aluminum wheels. Confirmed figures list a 94.5-inch overall length, a 25.5-inch laden seat height (27.1 inches unladen), 5.1 inches of ground clearance, a 31-degree rake with 5.8 inches of trail, and a 64.5-inch wheelbase. It carries 5 gallons of fuel and 3.5 quarts of oil, and weighs 730 lbs dry and 761 lbs ready to ride.

This is the last year of the Heritage on the 1,584cc Twin Cam 96B. For 2012 Harley moved the Softail range, including the Heritage, to the Twin Cam 103B.
