Heritage Softail Classic FLSTC (2010): A New Fuel Tank Sender and a Helical-Cut Fifth Gear

Harley's own 2010 spec sheet lists a new fuel tank sender for accurate fuel-level readings and a new helical-cut fifth gear for improved transmission sound. The rest is the nostalgic Heritage formula, which Harley says recalls a bygone era while the studded leather saddlebags and removable windshield make it a capable touring mount.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B, an air-cooled 1,584cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and hydraulic self-adjusting lifters. It has a 95.2-95.3 x 111.1-111.2mm bore and stroke and a 9.2:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection with single-fire, map-controlled ignition. Claimed torque is about 92 lb-ft (125 Nm) at 3,000 rpm. The gearbox is a 6-speed Cruise Drive with a 9-plate wet clutch, a 34/46 chain primary and belt final drive.

Standard equipment includes a chrome nostalgic seven-inch ball headlamp with a chrome directional light bar and passing lamps, a chrome horseshoe oil tank, a cats-eye tank console with a retro speedometer face and a two-tone leather tank panel with matching sissy-bar backrest trim. It also has half-round footboards, a two-piece two-up seat with removable pillion, studded leather saddlebags with hidden quick-detach buckles, a detachable king-size Lexan windshield and chrome laced steel wheels with hub covers.

The chassis is a mild-steel tubular frame with a rectangular-section backbone, a 41.3mm telescopic fork with "beer can" covers (130mm of travel) and a hidden horizontal coil-over rear shock (109mm). Brakes are a single 292mm disc at each wheel, with a four-piston front caliper and a two-piston rear. Tires are an MT90B16 front and a 150/80B16 rear.

Confirmed figures list a 94.5-inch length, a 64.4-64.5-inch wheelbase, a 31-degree rake with 5.8 inches of trail and 5.1 inches of ground clearance. Seat height is 25.5 inches laden and 27.1 inches unladen. The tank holds 5 gallons and oil capacity is 3.5 quarts. Dry weight is 730 lbs (761 lbs in running order). Fuel economy is 35 mpg city and 54 mpg highway, and the US price was $16,999.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2010 Heritage Softail Classic FLSTC running the way it was built to.
