Heritage Softail Classic FLSTC (2007): The Year It Got the Twin Cam 96B and a Sixth Gear
2007 was when Harley’s Softail Heritage Classic went from 88 to 96 cubic inches. The new Twin Cam 96B is essentially a new engine, with a lighter camshaft design that replaces the old roller bearings with hydrostatic plain cam bearings, and lighter pistons and connecting rods. Harley’s own pitch is that the smooth-riding enjoyment of custom touring gets better with the new engine, the 6-speed Cruise Drive gearbox and Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), so there’s no choke lever to fiddle with. The bike gives early-dresser style, with a big FL front end, chrome passing lamps, studded leather saddlebags and a full windshield, all in a low-seat-height package. A new passenger seat arrived for 2007, and the windshield and seat detach for a more custom look. Chrome laced steel wheels were standard, with profile laced aluminum as a factory option. There were five solid and four two-tone colour choices, plus three two-tone custom options.
The Twin Cam 96B is a rigid-mounted, counterbalanced, air-cooled 1,584cc 45-degree V-twin with a 95.2mm x 111.2mm bore and stroke and a 9.2:1 compression ratio. Torque is about 92 lb-ft (124.7 Nm) at 3,000 rpm. The gearbox is a 6-speed Cruise Drive with belt final drive, and new gauges for 2007 illuminate a “6” in top gear.
The chassis has a 41.3mm telescopic fork with “beer can” covers, hidden horizontal rear shocks and a single 292mm front disc with a four-piston caliper. Confirmed figures list a dry weight of about 725 lbs (329 kg), a 5-gallon (about 19-litre) tank and a gross vehicle weight rating of 1,160 lbs.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Heritage Softail Classic FLSTC running the way it was built to.
