Heritage Softail Classic FLSTC (1999): The Last Evolution-Powered Heritage, Right Before the Twin Cam Softails Arrived
The 1999 FLSTC closed out the run of the Heritage Softail on the 1,340cc Evolution engine. The Twin Cam-powered Softails followed for 2000. Owners and collectors regard the late carbureted Evo as a sweet spot of classic Harley ownership: timeless styling, mechanical simplicity and reliability. The bike was designed to evoke Harleys of the 1940s and 50s, with modern touches including a five-speed gearbox, belt final drive, hidden rear suspension and electric start.
Power comes from the air-cooled 1,340cc (80 cu in) Evolution 45-degree V-twin, with pushrod-operated overhead valves and two valves per cylinder. It's carbureted, and the engine and exhaust carry chrome finishes. The gearbox is a 5-speed, with an 82-link 428 O-ring chain primary and belt final drive.
The touring equipment is what sets the Classic apart from the plain Softails. It comes with studded leather saddlebags, a passenger backrest, full fenders, floorboards and a detachable windshield. The wheels are laced steel with wide whitewall tires.
Parts data lists a 41mm fork, a 130/90H-16 tire at both ends, a 1.5-inch belt with 130 teeth on 32/65 pulleys, an RN12YC spark plug, an H30281 oil filter and a YTX20HL-BS battery. Lighting uses an H4 headlight bulb and a 1157 taillight bulb.
Because the 1999 FLSTC is the last Evolution Heritage, its engine and fuel-system parts won't fit the 2000-and-later Twin Cam 88B FLSTC. Check the VIN before ordering parts.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1999 Heritage Softail Classic FLSTC running the way it was built to.
