Softail Heritage Classic FLSTC (2000): New for 2000, the Counterbalanced Twin Cam 88 and a Detachable Windshield

Harley's own description says "new for 2000 is the Counterbalanced Twin Cam 88 and a detachable windshield." It sums up the bike as one for riders who want "the comfort of a softail bike with the classic look of a 1930s hardtail." The Heritage Classic is the Softail with full touring dress: a fat front fork, classic studded leather saddlebags, a chrome-studded seat, a full windshield, floorboards, a large chrome headlamp with twin passing lamps, a Fat Bob fuel tank and fishtail mufflers.

Power comes from the air-cooled Twin Cam 88B, a 1,449cc V-twin with two valves per cylinder and a 95.3 x 101.6mm bore and stroke. It makes a claimed 63 hp at 5,300 rpm and 106 Nm (78.2 lb-ft) of torque at 3,200 rpm through a 5-speed transmission with belt final drive. Dennis Kirk's factory-spec listing describes this year's engine as "Twin Cam 88B Carbureted, Balanced," so it runs a carburetor rather than fuel injection.

Confirmed factory specs list a 41mm fork and 130/90-16 tires at both ends. The drive belt is a 1 1/8-inch, 135-tooth unit on 32/70 pulleys, and the primary is an 82-link, 428-size O-ring chain. Braking is a single 292mm disc with a four-piston caliper at each wheel. The oil filter is an H30292, the spark plug is an RA8HC, and the headlight bulb is an H4.

Early Twin Cam engines have a known inspection point in the cam chain tensioner system, so check the service history on any bike.
