Softail Slim FLS (2014): The Softail Pared Down to Its Essentials, in the Style of 1950s Bobbers

Harley’s own line on the Slim is that it’s the Softail paired down to its essential elements, in the style of the custom bobbers of the 1950s. It has a narrow rear end, a trimmed FL front fender, a chopped rear fender, a solo seat and minimal chrome. A cat-eye console carries a retro-style speedometer. Other details are half-moon floorboards with retro-style foot control pads, a shotgun-style chrome exhaust, 16-inch laced wheels and a low seat. The 2014 bike has an enhanced, more comfortable seat. Seat height is 23.8 inches laden and 25.6 inches unladen, and the bike has no passenger seat. The US MSRP was $15,899.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counterbalanced Twin Cam 103B, an air-cooled 1,690cc V-twin with a 98.4mm x 111.1mm bore and stroke and a 9.6:1 compression ratio. It has an Automatic Compression Release and is fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection, and torque is about 97.4 lb-ft (132 Nm) at 3,250 rpm. The gearbox is a 6-speed with belt final drive.

The chassis has a telescopic front fork and hidden, horizontally mounted rear shocks. Wheels are 16-inch front and rear, with a Dunlop MT90B16 front tire and a Dunlop MU85B16 rear. Confirmed figures list a 1,635mm wheelbase, a 2,350mm length and a 1,100mm height. Dry weight is about 672 lbs (305 kg), or about 701 lbs (318 kg) in running order, and the tank holds 5 gallons.
