Softail Slim FLS (2012): New That Year, Built by Putting a Softail "on a Diet" to Make the Engine the Star
The Slim was a brand-new model for 2012, and Harley's designers were clear about the idea. Senior Designer Casey Ketterhagen said it was "time to once again make the engine the design focal point of a motorcycle," so the Softail was put on a diet: a narrow rear tire, a chopped fender, and a deliberate gap between the seat nose and the tank so the rider can see the top of the motor. The build borrowed from three existing models: the Cross Bones (exhaust, cat-eye dash, black laced wheels), the Blackline (rear fender and 144mm rear tire), and the Fat Boy Lo (black headlamp and nacelle).
Power comes from the counter-balanced Twin Cam 103B, an air-cooled 1,690cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. It's rigid-mounted in the frame and delivers a claimed 98.7 lb-ft (134 Nm) of torque at 3,000 rpm through a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission with belt final drive. Rider Magazine's test noted the top of the engine is visible from the saddle, and that the rigid mounting passes a healthy dose of vibration to the rider.
Confirmed figures list a 31-degree rake with 5.8 inches of trail, a 23.8-inch laden seat height (25.9 inches unladen), 4.5 inches of ground clearance, and about 700 lbs wet. The fuel tank holds 5 gallons, with a warning light for the last gallon. The standard bike came in blacked-out laced wheels, Hollywood-style handlebars, a cat-eye dash, half-moon footboards and a side-mounted license plate, with ABS available as part of the Security Package.
Base price was $15,499 in Vivid Black. Rider Magazine's test bike, with color and the Security Package, came to $17,079. Captain America rides a Slim in The Avengers, which came out the same year.
Early-build 2012 Softails, including the FLS and FLS103 codes, were part of a recall for possible corrosion of the front brake master cylinder banjo bolt threads. It's worth checking that the free remedy was done on any example built between August 2011 and February 2012.
