Freewheeler Trike FLRT (2018): The Low-Profile Trike with Ape Hangers on the Milwaukee-Eight 107
The Freewheeler is Harley’s stripped-down, low-profile trike, introduced for 2015 as the lighter alternative to the Tri Glide Ultra. In 2018 it uses the counterbalanced Milwaukee-Eight 107 in a special trike frame with a belt-driven dual rear-wheel setup. Because trikes don’t lean and have no power steering, it has a wide, tall ape-hanger handlebar that gives extra steering leverage, plus a damper to quell steering shake, and six-piston front brake calipers help bring the bike to a stop. A lockable trunk of about 2 cubic feet sits between the rear wheels, which are controlled by air shocks adjustable for different loads. Electronic cruise control and a reverse gear are standard, and ABS is a factory option. The front wheel is a 19-inch Enforcer cast aluminum with a 130/60B19 tire, and the rear tires are car-size P205/65R15. The 2018 US price was $26,449 plus $856 destination.
The engine is the Milwaukee-Eight 107, a 1,746cc air/oil-cooled V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and four valves per cylinder. Bore and stroke are 100.1mm x 111.1mm (3.937 x 4.375 in), with a 10:1 compression ratio and Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Torque is 110.6 lb-ft (about 150 Nm) at 3,500 rpm, power is about 87-89 hp, and Harley lists fuel economy of about 43 mpg. The exhaust is shorty slash-down chrome mufflers. The gearbox is a 6-speed with reverse, a 34/46 chain primary drive and belt final drive, with overall ratios of 10.534 in first, 7.302 in second, 5.423 in third, 4.392 in fourth, 3.741 in fifth and 3.157 in sixth.
The chassis has a 26-degree rake with 3.96 inches of trail on a 65.7-inch wheelbase. The Freewheeler is 103 inches long, with 4.9 inches of ground clearance. Seat height is 26.2 inches laden and 27.6 inches unladen.
The tank holds 6 gallons (22.7 litres), and engine oil capacity is 5.2 quarts with the filter. The Freewheeler weighs 1,085 lbs (492 kg) as shipped and 1,118 lbs (507 kg) in running order.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Freewheeler FLRT running the way it was built to.
