Freewheeler (2015): Harley's Debut Trike Doubles the Factory Three-Wheeler Lineup
Motorcycle.com's own launch coverage nailed the significance immediately: Harley-Davidson stands as "the only motorcycle OEM to produce factory trikes," and for 2015, the Freewheeler doubled the number of three-wheelers in the Motor Company's catalog. Where the existing Tri Glide leaned into full touring bulk, the all-new FLRT was purpose-built to be, in Motorcycle.com's own words, "even less intimidating for a new rider to operate" — genuinely lighter, more compact, and more approachable.
Power comes from the air-cooled, transverse 45-degree High Output Twin Cam 103 (103B), 1,690cc via a 3.87 in. bore and 4.38 in. stroke, delivering a claimed 104.7 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm through a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission with hydraulic assist-and-slip clutch and belt final drive. Rider Magazine's testing highlighted the genuinely practical electric reverse — handlebar-mounted control with an LED indicator — a real necessity given the trike's substantial footprint that can't simply be walked backward. Built on the same fundamental chassis as the Tri Glide, the Freewheeler shed the fairing and Tour-Pak entirely, cutting a genuine 133-135 lbs versus its sibling for a claimed 1,082 lb wet weight.
Styling leans hard into hot-rod attitude: a seven-piece chrome nacelle housing dual halogen headlights, tucked in tight against the frame and forks, paired with 12-inch mini ape-hanger handlebars that bring hand controls close to the rider. Bobtail rear fenders with integrated LED lighting replace the Tri Glide's fuller coverage, and a shortened, low-profile trunk — 3 inches shorter than the Tri Glide's Tour-Pak — still claims 2 cubic feet of capacity, though Motorcycle.com's own testers found fitting two full-face helmets a genuinely tight squeeze depending on size. A one-piece, two-up Comfort Stitch seat moves the rider an inch forward for a more engaged riding position. Front braking uses a 6-piston fixed caliper with linked rear pistons, riding on a 19-inch Enforcer cast-aluminum front wheel and dual 15-inch rears. Dimensions run 103.1 in. long with a 66-inch wheelbase, 26-degree rake, and 26.9 in. laden seat height, carrying a 6-gallon tank. 2015 launch pricing started at $24,999 for Vivid Black, with Amber Whiskey and Superior Blue color options at $25,499.
