Street Glide Special FLHXS (2018): The Hot Rod Bagger with the Blacked-Out Milwaukee-Eight 107 and New Talon Wheels

Harley’s line for the 2018 Street Glide Special is “when it comes to hot rod baggers, the Street Glide Special is way out front.” It has the tire-smoking power of a blacked-out Milwaukee-Eight 107 at the heart of dark finishes that stretch from headlight to exhaust. New cast aluminum Talon wheels, a 19-inch front and an 18-inch rear, have spokes that extend all the way to the edge of the rim for the illusion of a larger wheel. The stretched saddlebags accentuate the long, low profile, and the blacked-out front forks, handlebars, tank console and exhaust give it an aggressive, modern look. There’s a painted inner fairing and the Boom! Box 6.5GT touchscreen infotainment system with Stage I speakers. ABS, the security system and cruise control are standard. The 2018 US price was $25,999 plus $435 destination ($26,499 in a color, $28,999 in Hard Candy Custom).

The engine is the blacked-out Milwaukee-Eight 107, a 1,746cc air/oil-cooled V-twin with four valves per cylinder, a 100mm bore, a 111.1mm stroke and a 10:1 compression ratio. Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection feeds it, and Harley says each Milwaukee-Eight makes 10 percent more torque than the engine it replaced. Torque is 111 lb-ft (150 Nm) at 3,250 rpm, power is about 89 hp at 5,450 rpm, and Harley lists fuel economy of about 45 mpg. The exhaust is a black 2-1-2 dual system with tapered mufflers, and the gearbox is a 6-speed with a 34/46 chain primary drive and belt final drive.

Brakes are 32mm four-piston fixed calipers on dual front discs and a rear disc, and tires are a Dunlop 130/60B19 61H at the front and a 180/55B18 80H at the rear. Rake is 26 degrees with 6.8 inches (173mm) of trail on a 64-inch (1,625mm) wheelbase. The bike is about 96.5 inches (2,450mm) long, with 4.9 inches of ground clearance. Seat height is 26.1 inches laden and 27.2 inches (690mm) unladen.

The tank holds 6 gallons (22.7 litres), engine oil capacity is 5.2 quarts with the filter, and the saddlebags hold about 2.5 cubic feet. The Street Glide Special weighs 798 lbs (362 kg) as shipped and 836 lbs (379 kg) in running order.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Street Glide Special FLHXS running the way it was built to.
