Street Glide Special FLHXS (2014): New for 2014, and the First Year Harley Put a CVO-Style Suspension on a Regular-Production Street Glide
The Street Glide Special is a genuinely new model for 2014, taking the standard Street Glide's hot-rod bagger formula and bundling in a host of upgrades as standard equipment: Reflex Linked Brakes with ABS, the Boom! Box 6.5GT touchscreen infotainment system with GPS navigation, a Gloss Black inner fairing (versus the matte black finish on the standard bike), and CVO-style hand-adjustable lowered rear suspension.
Power comes from the High Output Twin Cam 103, a 1,690cc air-cooled V-twin with new cams and a high-flow airbox, delivering a claimed 104.7 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm through a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission with an integrated Isolated Drive System (IDS). Rider Magazine's own test flags the genuine hardware change behind that upgrade: a beefier new 49mm fork replacing the outgoing 43.1mm unit, paired with a new triple clamp using sealed bearings. Saddlebags still open outward, but new single latches on the back are a real step up in convenience.
Standard equipment also includes a redesigned Batwing fairing with a Splitstream vent to cut down head buffeting, and premium 5.25-inch Boom! Box speakers for improved sound quality. This was one of eight new motorcycles Harley launched simultaneously that year as part of Project Rushmore, the largest scale new-model launch in the company's 110-year history at the time.
