Road King Special FLHRXS (2019): The Blacked-Out Bagger-Style Road King with the Milwaukee-Eight 114
Harley’s tagline for the 2019 Road King Special is “blacked-out, stripped-down bare muscle,” with the dark side of the Road King’s heritage. The Special turned the Road King into a bagger in 2017, with no windshield, mini-ape handlebars that are 9 inches tall and 1.25 inches wide so you sit taller and ride more aggressively, black parts in place of chrome, and Custom Black Turbine cast aluminum wheels, a 19-inch front and an 18-inch rear. Reflex linked Brembo brakes with standard ABS electronically link the front and rear brakes, the rear shocks are easily hand-adjustable for a plush ride, and the 2019 colors included Twisted Cherry, Bonneville Salt Denim and Midnight Blue. For 2019 the Special got the Milwaukee-Eight 114, and the US price was $23,089 plus $435 destination.
The engine is the Milwaukee-Eight 114, a 1,868cc air/oil-cooled V-twin with four valves per cylinder, a 102.1mm bore, a 114.3mm stroke and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection feeds it. Torque is about 122 lb-ft (165 Nm) at 3,000 rpm, European power is about 90 hp at 5,020 rpm, and Harley lists fuel economy of about 43 mpg. The exhaust is a black 2-1-2 dual system with tapered mufflers, and the gearbox is a 6-speed with belt final drive.
The brakes are 32mm four-piston fixed calipers at the front and rear, with dual front discs. Tires are a 130/60B19 61H at the front and a 180/55B18 80H at the rear. Rake is 26 degrees with about 6.8-6.9 inches (173mm) of trail on a 64-inch (1,625mm) wheelbase, and lean angles are about 32 degrees to the right and 31 to the left. The bike is about 95.3 inches long, with 4.9-5.5 inches of ground clearance. Seat height is 26.4 inches laden and 27.4 inches (695mm) unladen.
The tank holds 6 gallons (22.7 litres), engine oil capacity is 5.2 quarts (4.9 litres) with the filter, and the saddlebags hold about 2.7 cubic feet. The Special weighs about 783 lbs (355 kg) as shipped and about 820 lbs (372 kg) in running order.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Road King Special FLHRXS running the way it was built to.
