Road King FLHR (2008): New Brembo Brakes, a Six-Gallon Tank, and Electronic Throttle Control — Genuine Changes, Not Just a Fresh Coat of Paint
2008 brought real, substantive hardware upgrades to the base Road King alongside the Anniversary trim: a new Brembo braking system with dual front discs, a larger six-gallon fuel tank with a new fuel range indicator, Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), a new Isolated Drive System, and a redesigned handlebar — genuine mechanical refinement rather than a styling-only update that model year.
Power comes from the air-cooled Twin Cam 96, a 1,584cc V-twin, pushrod-operated overhead valves with hydraulic self-adjusting lifters, a 95.2mm x 111.2mm bore and stroke, and a 9.2:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), delivering a claimed 67 hp (49 kW) at 5,200 rpm and roughly 92-92.6 lb-ft (125 Nm) of torque at 3,500 rpm through a 6-speed Cruise Drive manual transmission with chain primary (34/46 ratio) and belt final drive.
Standard styling kept the Road King's genuinely classic formula: a full-coverage front fender, a detachable windshield, white-stripe tires, and black 9-spoke cast aluminum wheels, with the option of Chrome Profile Laced Aluminum wheels. Braking used dual 292-300mm front discs with 4-piston Brembo calipers and a single 292-300mm rear disc with a matching 4-piston caliper — a genuine upgrade over the earlier single-disc front setup used on older Road Kings.
Confirmed factory dimensions list a 93.7-inch length, a 27.3-inch laden seat height (29.9 inches unladen), 5.1 inches of ground clearance, a 26-degree rake with 6.2 inches of trail, and a 63.5-inch wheelbase, riding on 130/70R18 front and 170/60R17 rear Dunlop tires. Fuel economy is rated around 35 mpg city and 54 mpg highway, with a dry weight of 740 lbs (777 lbs in running order). 2008 US pricing started at $17,595.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2008 Road King FLHR running the way it was built to.
