Softail Deluxe (2018): The Milwaukee-Eight Landing on Harley's '50s-Style Cruiser

Motorcycle News called it simply: with the Softail Slim and Heritage Classic both moving toward a post-WWII bobber look, the Deluxe stands alone in 2018 as Harley's only genuinely '50s-inspired cruiser in the lineup — and the reinvented Softail platform delivered it "better than ever." Ultimate Motorcycling's 10 Fast Facts review put the powertrain change plainly: the Milwaukee-Eight that debuted on Harley's Touring line now anchors the Softail family too, calling it "a huge upgrade" over the old High Output Twin-Cam 103B it replaced.

The Milwaukee-Eight 107 delivers a claimed 86 hp at 5,020 rpm and 109 lb-ft of torque at just 3,000 rpm, run through electronic sequential port fuel injection and a 6-speed transmission with clean, quiet, low-maintenance belt final drive. The new engine's more effective counterbalancing gives it a noticeably smoother character than the outgoing Twin Cam, while the reinvented Softail frame — using a single inclined rear shock instead of dual units mounted beneath the transmission — trims 33 lbs and delivers genuinely more taut, lithe handling.

Styling stays firmly rooted in the boulevard-cruiser look: whitewall tires, wire wheels, and generous chrome, paired with a new tank, oil tank, and — for the first time — LED lighting throughout, including the iconic triple headlights and signature Tombstone tail light. Dry weight comes in at 668 lbs, with a 5-gallon tank rated for a claimed 47 mpg combined. 2018 pricing started at $17,999.
