Monster 1200R (2016-2019): Ducati Gives the Roadster Back "The Powerful, Fiery Taste of the Monster of Yesteryear"
Motoplanete's own retrospective frames the R's genuine positioning within the Monster range perfectly: "with the Monster 1200 R, Ducati gives the roadster back the powerful, fiery taste of the Monster of yesteryear, before the era of the 1098 Streetfighter" — a genuine return to the Monster nameplate's raw, analog naked-bike roots, deliberately built as the range-topping, most performance-focused variant sitting above the standard 1200 and 1200S.
Power comes from the Testastretta 11° DS, a longitudinal 90-degree L-twin, DOHC with 4 desmodromically-actuated valves per cylinder, delivering a claimed 160 hp at 9,250 rpm and roughly 97-99 lb-ft of torque at 7,750 rpm — MCN's own review confirms this represents "power up 10% over the S model thanks to an increased exhaust diameter (up 8mm), larger throttle bodies and raised compression," with other internal changes aimed at noise reduction and Euro 4 compliance. Motoplanete's own coverage flags a genuine spec discrepancy worth knowing when sourcing parts or comparing model years: press materials from 2016 quote 160 hp and 13.4 mkg (97 lb-ft) of torque, while later official Ducati figures for 2018-2019 models list 157 hp and 12.7 mkg (92 lb-ft) — a real running change in output across this production span rather than a simple reporting error.
MCN's own owner reviews are genuinely enthusiastic about the chassis: "adjustable front and rear suspension... razor sharp in sport mode for track and soft and compliant for UK roads set to comfort. Öhlins front and rear. Doesn't get any better," with the R-specific Öhlins fork and shock lengthened to lift the main body by 15mm versus lesser Monster variants, delivering genuinely increased ground clearance. Ducati-specs.com's own feature comparison confirms the R uniquely omits Ducati Quick-Shift and Ducati Wheelie Control — features added to the rest of the Monster 1200 range from 2018 onward — reflecting the R's deliberately more analog, rider-engaged character; MCN's own owner testimonial backs this directly: "I prefer to keep the analogue nature of the bike and pure riding style and engagement with the bike... not available with a quick shifter although aftermarket models are available." Braking uses Brembo M50 calipers borrowed directly from the 1299 Panigale superbike, gripping 330mm front discs, backed by Bosch 9MP 3-stage sport ABS, three riding modes (Sport/Touring/Urban), and 8-level traction control shown on a TFT instrument panel. Dry weight comes in at a genuinely light 180kg (396.8 lbs) — 2kg lighter than the Monster S thanks to carbon components, forged Marchesini wheels, and special footrests — with a 32.7-inch seat height and 6-speed gearbox. 2016 US pricing started at $18,695, rising to $19,395 by 2019.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2016-2019 Monster 1200R running the way it was built to.
