Hyperstrada 821 (2013-2015): "Much Like KTM's Successful 990 SMT" — Real-World Touring Bolted Onto a Genuine Supermoto
MCN's own review sums up the pitch directly: "this is the touring version of Ducati's revamped 2013-model Hypermotard. It gives you all the thrills of a supermoto with real-world touring capability — much like KTM's successful 990 SMT... it's a little breathless on fast A-roads. It's roomy, comfortable, practical and has decent wind protection, but riding two-up is a squeeze."
Power comes from a second-generation, 11-degree Testastretta 821cc liquid-cooled V-twin — a stroked version of the previous 796 unit — delivering a claimed 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and roughly 65.8 lb-ft (89 Nm) of torque at 7,750 rpm, with a slipper clutch standard. RevZilla's own review confirms genuine enthusiasm for the engine: "a lot of the forums had complaints about really twitchy clutches making it difficult to get out of first, but the unit I rode was simply flawless." MotoFomo's own owner review confirms that grabby clutch was a genuine known issue on early bikes: "in stock trim, the clutch is really grabby... has to be resolved with an aftermarket clutch pack" on 2013-2014 models specifically.
The Ducati Safety Pack comes standard — eight-level traction control and three-level ABS — plus Sport, Touring, and Urban riding modes each altering power delivery, throttle response, traction control, and ABS intervention. MCN's own review found the standard suspension genuinely soft for aggressive riding but easily transformed: "wind on more rear preload and rebound damping (forks are non-adjustable) and the Ducati is transformed — the steering is crisp and there's enough poise and ground clearance for trackdays."
RevZilla's own confirmed touring-specific equipment lists two 25-litre semi-rigid panniers, a center stand, dual 12-volt outlets, passenger grab handles, an engine sump guard, and extended mudguards — genuine practical additions over the sportier Hypermotard sharing this same engine and chassis. MotoFomo's own owner review flags a genuine ergonomic quirk worth knowing: "the Ducati Hyperstrada is TALL. This causes tears in the seats as people swing a leg over." Wet weight comes in at 419 lbs with a 4.2-gallon fuel tank, and 2013 US pricing started at $13,295.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2013-2015 Hyperstrada 821 running the way it was built to.
