Hypermotard 950 SP (2019-2022): "A College-House Party on Wheels," Now With Öhlins Doing the Talking

Cycle News' own review doesn't pretend this bike serves any practical purpose beyond pure fun: "it's useless as a long-range touring bike, it's stiff, mostly uncomfortable, but damn if it's not one that makes you laugh your butt off each time you ride... it makes no claims of being anything other than a college-house party on wheels." Introduced for the 2019 model year as the range-topping trim above the standard Hypermotard 950, the SP variant took the platform's fundamental hooligan-supermotard character and layered on genuine premium suspension.

Power comes from the Testastretta 11°, a longitudinal 90-degree L-twin, DOHC with 8 valves (4 per cylinder), delivering a claimed 112-114 hp at 9,000 rpm and roughly 71-71.5 lb-ft of torque at 7,250 rpm through a 6-speed gearbox — Motorcycle.com's own launch review notes the engine shares its fundamental architecture with the contemporary Monster, and confirms a new steel trellis frame with variable-thickness tubing shed a genuine 2.2 lbs versus the previous-generation Hypermotard, paired with a redesigned tubular steel subframe and a slimmer midsection specifically engineered for both sportier riding and easier reach to the ground for shorter riders.

The SP's defining upgrade over the base model is genuinely premium suspension: Cycle News' own review confirms "part of the extra $3,500 spent gets you a shiny Öhlins fork and this shock, plus the corresponding increase in handling behavior you'd expect from such an upgrade" — a fully adjustable Öhlins setup replacing the base bike's Marzocchi fork, working through the platform's genuinely extreme geometry: a 35-inch seat height and just 4.1 inches of trail, dimensions Cycle News calls "unlike any motorcycle with a license plate." Motorcycle.com's own first-ride review details the sophisticated electronics underpinning the SP's cornering-aware safety net: Ducati Traction Control EVO interfacing with a Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit to continuously calculate lean angle, with a genuinely track-focused Level 1 ABS setting available through the menu (not selectable as a default Riding Mode) that permits motard-style rear-wheel drifting into corners via Slide by Brake function while deactivating the rear-wheel anti-lift-up control — real, deliberate allowance for aggressive, tail-out riding that most modern ABS systems are designed specifically to prevent. A 4.3-inch TFT display, Ducati Wheelie Control EVO, and provisions for the Ducati Multimedia System rounded out the electronics package, with the SP's dedicated seat borrowed from a sportier trim for a genuinely different perch than the standard model. Claimed ready-to-ride weight sits around 440 lbs with a 3.8-gallon tank, and US pricing climbed from $16,695 in 2019 to $17,695 by 2022.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2019-2022 Hypermotard 950 SP running the way it was built to.
