Hypermotard 821 SP (2013-2015): Bennetts' Reviewer Loved the Concept the First Time, Then Found This One Genuinely Delivers

Bennetts' own review is candid about the disappointment its predecessor left behind, which makes this bike's improvement genuinely notable: "I have to admit that my personal feelings on the old SP were that I loved the concept but in reality it was slow, underpowered, and on track where it should have come into its own it was gutless and ran out of ground clearance too quickly." This 821-based SP is a different story entirely — "the new engine is a peach, produces 110bhp in both SP and stock guise (which is more than both the old air-cooled 796 and 1100) and honestly makes you question why you would need any more, especially in this guise."

Power comes from the second-generation, 11-degree Testastretta 821cc liquid-cooled V-twin, delivering a claimed 110 hp — identical peak output to the standard Hypermotard 821, with the SP's real advantage coming from chassis hardware rather than extra power. Bennetts' own review confirms exactly what that upgrade package includes: lighter Marchesini forged wheels, Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires, a fully-adjustable Öhlins rear shock and 50mm Marzocchi forks, a radial master cylinder, more ground clearance, a taller 890mm seat, a carbon-fiber front mudguard, and magnesium cam belt covers, plus sportier riding modes.

Bennetts' own on-track testing found the combination genuinely potent: "it's hugely tractable even at low revs. On the way out of the corner it finds a ridiculous amount of grip from the Pirelli Diablo Super Corsa tyres, sticks the front wheel towards the sky and clears off. Even with Ducati's brilliant traction control and anti-wheelie cutting in on certain engine modes, you have to cover the back brake constantly in the first two gears to keep the front wheel down." That same review confirms genuinely aggressive gearing: "the short-ish gearing means it accelerates hard from 30-80mph, shifting up around 9500rpm before it runs out of power and revs."

Bennetts' own final verdict sums up the character honestly: "it's a hard-charging big bike that will put a smile on anyone's face, but make no mistake it's pretty hardcore, just like an SP version should be." Standard Ducati Safety Pack electronics — traction control and ABS across Sport, Touring, and Urban riding modes — carried over from the standard 821, with the SP's sportier mode calibration sharpening throttle response further still.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2013-2015 Hypermotard 821 SP running the way it was built to.
