Hypermotard 821 (2013-2015): Bennetts' Review Doesn't Hold Back — "The Spawn of a Devil Child, Delivered from the Mind of a Mad Man"

Bennetts' own review of the range-topping SP variant confirms exactly what changed with this 2013 redesign: "out has gone the old 1100cc air-cooled motor and in has come a brand new liquid-cooled engine, along with a more forgiving riding position, new electronics, a restyle and a whole new chassis," replacing both the original air-cooled 1100 and 796 versions entirely. MCN's own review confirms the genuine hardware refinement across the standard model too: "the old twin exhaust cans have been replaced with a single side-mounted unit to reduce weight and improve handling. A longer swingarm makes the Ducati less 'slappy' riding across bumpy terrain, and new 43mm Kayaba forks and Sachs rear shock give a plusher ride."

Power comes from an 821cc liquid-cooled 8-valve Testastretta V-twin — a stroked version of the outgoing 796 unit — delivering a claimed 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and roughly 65.8 lb-ft (89 Nm) of torque, run through a slipper clutch as standard. MCN's own review is candid the trade-off for going liquid-cooled and modern was a genuine loss of low-end character: "lacks the lowdown grunt of the old 4v, air-cooled 1078cc motor — there's no substitute for cubes, after all." New cast-aluminum monobloc Brembo calipers handled braking, a genuine upgrade even though MCN's review notes the lightweight Hypermotard "never struggled with braking power" to begin with.

The range-topping SP trim added lighter Marchesini forged wheels, Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires, fully-adjustable Öhlins shock and 50mm Marzocchi forks, a radial master cylinder, more ground clearance, a taller 890mm seat, a carbon-fiber mudguard, magnesium cam belt covers, and sportier riding modes — Bennetts' own testing found it "hugely tractable even at low revs," with the front wheel readily lifting under acceleration even with traction control and anti-wheelie active.

MCN's own owner-collected feedback flags genuine reliability caveats worth checking on a used example: "various recalls and improvements made by Ducati (throttle recall, various ECU updates, dashboard recall)," alongside minor corrosion reported on some bolts. Curb weight sat just 3kg over the outgoing 1100 despite the new radiator, hoses, electronics, and ABS system.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2013-2015 Hypermotard 821 running the way it was built to.
