Diavel 1200 ABS (2011-2014): The Base Model That "Puts a Fair Few Sportsbikes to Shame, Let Alone Cruisers"

MCN's own buying guide doesn't soften the shock value of this bike's core proposition: "powered by the Testastretta 11-degree V-twin, the Ducati Diavel makes a seriously impressive 160bhp with 94ft.lb of torque, which puts a fair few sportsbikes to shame, let alone cruisers!" Bennetts' own retrospective adds a note of genuine bewilderment shared by plenty of period observers at launch: "what on earth were Ducati doing entering the cruiser market?... you just have to love the fact that Ducati didn't pull any punches and stuck the Testastretta 11-degree engine straight into their cruiser model."

Power comes from the Testastretta 11°, a 1198.4cc liquid-cooled 90-degree L-twin, DOHC with 8 valves and desmodromic actuation, a 106mm x 67.9mm bore and stroke, and an 11.5:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 162 hp at 9,500 rpm and roughly 94 lb-ft (127.5 Nm) of torque at 8,000 rpm through a 6-speed manual gearbox with chain final drive. Rider Magazine's own detailed account traces the genuine engineering lineage behind this powerplant back through Ducati's own history: "engine, frame and electronics are adapted from the Multistrada 1200, itself the beneficiary of a detuned Testastretta engine from the 1198 superbike" — a real, direct line of descent from Ducati's flagship sportbike architecture into a full-size power cruiser.

Bennetts' own confirmed pricing for the base model at UK launch lists a genuine £12,995 MSRP against the higher-spec Carbon's £15,895 — the standard Diavel running the identical fundamental engine, frame, and electronics package while forgoing the Carbon trim's forged Marchesini wheels and carbon-fiber bodywork panels. MCN's own review confirms the standard model shares the same genuinely comprehensive electronics suite across the whole range: "a ride-by-wire throttle with traction control as well as three riding modes – Sport, Touring and Urban," managed through the same fundamental fuel injection and ABS hardware.

The chassis uses a tubular steel trellis frame, with braking through dual 320mm semi-floating Brembo front discs and a 265mm rear disc, both backed by standard ABS on the model years this manual covers — MCN's own account confirms the base model carries the same fundamental suspension architecture as the Carbon, just without the DLC-treated coating found on the pricier trim's fork tubes. Bennetts' own used-buying guide confirms genuinely favorable long-term ownership economics for the whole Diavel family during this era: "the Testastretta motor is a really solid unit and when buying used you only need to worry about service history, which on the Diavel isn't too horrible thanks to an extended service schedule... new valve technology had allowed them to extend the costly 'desmo' valve-clearance check service and belt swap to 15,000 miles." A 2014 mid-cycle engine refinement carried across the entire range, standard and Carbon alike — Bennetts' own coverage confirms "twin spark plugs per cylinder, reshaped ports, revised cam timing, higher compression ratio and new, slash-cut silencers combine to give more torque below 9000rpm... the peak power output of 162bhp is unchanged," alongside a new LED headlight, reshaped seat, and a fuel gauge added to the instrument panel — closing out this exact generation before Ducati's more substantially updated 2015 Diavel took over with a further-revised dual-spark engine and new styling.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2011-2014 Diavel 1200 ABS running the way it was built to.
