DesertX (2022-2024): Ducati's Genuine First Real Off-Road Bike, Built in the Shadow of the Cagiva Elefant
Cycle World's own retrospective doesn't hedge on Ducati's spotty history in this segment: "the Bologna-based brand has had a scattershot history of building off-road motorcycles... in 2022, delivering the DesertX, a middleweight ADV built in the shadow of the Desmodue-powered Cagiva Elefant desert racer" — a genuine link to Ducati's own Dakar-winning heritage under prior ownership, since both brands trace legitimate claim to that Elefant legacy through the Castiglioni family's former ownership of Cagiva. First shown as a prototype at EICMA 2019, the production DesertX finally reached the market in May 2022 after two further years of development — Ducati's rally-development driver Antoine Meo called the project genuinely high-stakes: "it was a lot of pressure. It's Ducati's first real off-road bike, a new customer, so it was very important."
Power comes from the Testastretta 11°, a liquid-cooled 90-degree 937cc V-twin, desmodromic 4-valve-per-cylinder DOHC, with a 94mm x 67.5mm bore and stroke, delivering a claimed 110 hp at 9,250-10,750 rpm and roughly 68-69 lb-ft of torque at 6,500-9,000 rpm through a 6-speed wet multi-plate manual gearbox with chain final drive. Cycle World's own testing found the DesertX genuinely earns its off-road-focused billing despite outweighing its most direct rival, the KTM 890 Adventure R, by over 20 lbs and feeling comparatively top-heavy: "its 937cc Testastretta 11° engine, long-travel suspension, long wheelbase, superb electronic controls, and quality components give it its own lane through the dunes," with genuinely surprising on-road manners for a bike built this deliberately off-road-oriented.
Standard equipment across the range includes a fully adjustable 46mm Kayaba fork, radial Brembo monobloc calipers on dual 330mm front discs, a 5-inch vertically-oriented color TFT dash integrating with the Ducati Multimedia System, and a genuinely comprehensive electronics suite: six riding modes (Sport, Urban, Touring, Wet, Enduro, and Rally), four power modes, three-level cornering Bosch ABS, eight-level Ducati Traction Control, Ducati Wheelie Control, Engine Brake Control, Ducati Cruise Control, and up/down Ducati Quick Shift. 2024 brought the range-topping DesertX Rally variant, sharing the identical 937cc engine and tubular steel chassis but adding higher-spec KYB suspension (a 48mm upside-down fork with 9.8 inches of travel), a taller off-road mudguard and Erzbergrodeo-inspired graphics honoring Antoine Meo's competition livery, a carbon-fiber skid plate delivering 11 inches of ground clearance, and 21-inch front/18-inch rear wheels shod in Pirelli Scorpion Rally tires — genuinely purpose-built hardware for serious rally-style riding, commanding a $5,000 premium over the base model at $22,995. Claimed dry weight on the base DesertX sits at 211kg (465 lbs), with the Rally adding only a genuine 2kg (4.4 lbs) despite its more aggressive off-road specification.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2022-2024 DesertX running the way it was built to.
