Ducati 1098 Twin R 2007-2009 Service Manual

The 1098R arrived in 2008 as the range-topping variant alongside the standard 1098 and 1098S, built specifically as a homologation special so Ducati could race in the World Superbike Championship. It carried Troy Bayliss to the 2008 World Championship, and Ducati commemorated that win with a dedicated 2009 Bayliss Limited Edition featuring livery designed by Aldo Drudi and the famous number 21, alongside a separate 500-unit Puma Limited Edition sold exclusively in Japan.

Power comes from a larger-displacement 1,198cc L-twin (bored and stroked beyond the standard 1098's 1,099cc via a 106.0mm x 67.9mm configuration), a 90-degree Desmodromic engine with 4 valves per cylinder, liquid-cooled and fed by electronic fuel injection. Output is a claimed 180 hp at 9,750 rpm and roughly 99 lb-ft of torque at 7,750 rpm, delivering what was, at the time of release, the highest torque-to-weight ratio of any production sportbike ever built. A sand-cast crankcase along with titanium valves and connecting rods helped bring dry weight down to a claimed 373 lbs.

Braking hardware matched the performance ambition: dual 330mm front discs with four-piston calipers and a single 245mm rear disc with a dual-piston caliper, backed by a fully adjustable 43mm TiN-coated inverted fork and an Öhlins TTXS shock on race-spec variants. Traction control came standard — a genuine rarity for a production sportbike in 2008. Top speed sits around 180 mph through a 6-speed gearbox with chain final drive. Only around 1,375 units were produced across the model's run before the 1098R was replaced by the 1198 for 2010, though it remained in production through 2009 alongside its successor.
