Power comes from the new Testastretta Evoluzione 1,099cc L-twin, a 90-degree Desmodromic engine with 4 valves per cylinder, fed by Marelli fuel injection and delivering a claimed 160 hp at 9,750 rpm with 90 lb-ft of torque at 8,000 rpm. Reviewers consistently praised how flexible that power delivery was in practice — one owner noted the engine's usable spread meant third gear alone could comfortably handle everything from 30 to 125 mph, a rare trait among literbike-class superbikes typically tuned for peak-power aggression over midrange usability.

The 2008 model year brought a genuine engineering first: the 1098 became the first production motorcycle fitted with Brembo stopping power as standard, alongside an integrated data acquisition system and an innovative new construction method for the single-sided swingarm.
