Challenger 500/700: Cub Cadet's First Challenger-Series Utility Vehicles
The Challenger 500 and 700 launched Cub Cadet's Challenger series of UTVs. They were priced several thousand dollars below many better-known brands, going up against Kymco and CFMoto in the budget end of the market. The 500 started at $8,499 and the 700 at $9,499, in yellow or camo.
Power comes from a liquid-cooled four-stroke single with electronic fuel injection. The 500 has a 471cc engine. The 700 has a 686cc engine with a 102mm x 84mm bore and stroke and a 9.2:1 compression ratio, and it makes a claimed 33.5 hp (25 kW). Electric start is standard. The 700 runs a continuously variable transmission with Hi/Low range and reverse, a belt primary drive and shaft drive to the front axle.
Both share four-wheel drive with a front locking differential and four-wheel independent, adjustable suspension on double A-arms. Brakes are hydraulic discs at all four wheels, and the 700's are 8-inch (203mm) units. The 700 rolls on 12-inch aluminum wheels with Carlisle 26x9-12 front and 26x10-12 rear tires. A large mid-mount air intake is designed for wading.
Confirmed standard equipment includes a hard-top roof, a quick-release windshield, a 350-lb cargo box and a 1,200-lb towing capacity. The 700's listed top speed is 45 mph with 11 inches of ground clearance. One owner report describes early clutch wear on a 2017 Challenger 700, so check that component on any used machine.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Cub Cadet Challenger 500/700 running the way it was built to.
