CFMOTO ZFORCE 500 and ZFORCE 550 (2018-2022): The 495cc Side-by-Side with CVT, Selectable 4WD and a Locking Front Diff
CFMOTO’s ZFORCE 500, sold as the ZFORCE 550 in some markets, is its mid-size 495cc side-by-side for trail riding and work. The range includes the base Trail, the EX and the better-equipped EPS LX, and it’s built to face all types of terrain with outstanding handling at a budget price. The 2022 US price for the ZFORCE 500 Trail was $9,499. Standard equipment on the Trail includes a 3,000-lb winch, a 2-inch hitch receiver and a digital dashboard with full instrumentation, while the EPS LX adds electric power steering, a roof, gas-adjustable shocks and 14-inch aluminum alloy wheels. The machine is just 50 inches wide, so it fits narrow trails.
Power comes from a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, SOHC four-stroke with four valves and a displacement of 495cc, a 91mm bore, a 76.2mm stroke and a 10.3:1 compression ratio. Bosch electronic fuel injection feeds it, and it starts electrically. Output is about 38 hp at 6,800 rpm and 32 lb-ft of torque at 5,800 rpm, and European 550 versions are listed at about 37 hp. The CVTech automatic transmission has P, R, N, H and L positions, and the driveline is selectable 2WD or 4WD with a locking front differential, and shaft drive.
Suspension is independent at all four wheels, with brakes that are hydraulic discs at the front and rear. Tires are a 26x9-14 at the front and a 26x11-14 at the rear. The ZFORCE 500 Trail measures about 113 inches long (2,870mm), 50 inches wide (1,270mm) and 70 inches high, with an 80-inch (2,032-2,040mm) wheelbase and about 11.2 inches (285mm) of ground clearance. The turning diameter is about 187 inches (4,750mm), and the cargo box holds about 150 kg (330 lbs).
The Trail’s tank holds 6.5 US gallons (24.6 litres), and the EPS LX’s tank holds 27 litres (7.1 gallons). The Trail has a curb weight of about 1,228 lbs (557 kg), and the EPS LX weighs about 1,272 lbs (577 kg).
