S1000XR (2020-2023): The Second Generation Sharpens BMW's Sport-Adventure Formula
The 2020 model year brought a genuine second-generation overhaul to the S1000XR, not a mid-cycle refresh. Ultimate Motorcycling's launch coverage called it a complete revamp aimed at more power, sharper handling, and reduced weight — a comprehensive reworking of a bike that had already carved out a distinct niche between sportbike and adventure-tourer since its 2015 debut.
The 999cc liquid-cooled inline-four, now Euro 5 compliant, delivers a claimed 165 hp at 11,000 rpm and roughly 84 lb-ft of torque at 9,250 rpm, an incremental gain over the outgoing engine with genuinely improved torque delivery throughout the rev range. The chassis carries forward BMW's lightweight aluminum frame, giving the XR its distinctly sporty, aggressive stance relative to more upright adventure-touring rivals, while retaining enough wind protection and seat comfort for genuine long-distance touring duty.
Electronics took a meaningful step forward for this generation: a new 6.5-inch TFT display with connectivity features, refined riding modes (including Riding Modes Pro with HSC Pro, MSR, ABS Pro, and DTC), and Dynamic ESA electronic suspension adjustment that lets the bike automatically tune damping for load and riding style. A quick-shifter with up/down functionality, hill start control, and comprehensive traction control round out the package. Claimed top speed sits around 155 mph. 2023 pricing started at $16,945.
