R850C (1997-2001): BMW's Cruiser Experiment That Never Found Its Audience
Wikipedia's own account doesn't soften the R850C's commercial fate: it was "discontinued after only three years and 1505 units built, due to low sales, compared to the R1200C" — a genuinely rare BMW today, and one that shared essentially everything except its engine and fuel tank badge with its far more popular full-displacement sibling. Autoevolution's own model history frames the R850C plainly as "the sister model of the larger R1200C," introduced specifically to give BMW's cruiser lineup an entry-level displacement option in markets where licensing or insurance considerations favored a smaller engine.
Power comes from an 848cc air/oil-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine, delivering a claimed 50 hp at 5,250 rpm and roughly 52 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 rpm, run through a 5-speed gearbox — genuinely modest output by cruiser standards, pushing the bike to a claimed top speed of 155 km/h (95 mph). The related R850R roadster of the same era, sharing the same fundamental engine architecture, ran a 35mm BMW Telelever front suspension system with 120mm of travel and a die-cast aluminum swingarm with BMW's Paralever rear system offering 135mm of travel — genuinely sophisticated, shaft-drive-friendly suspension technology BMW applied consistently across its boxer lineup of this era, including the R850C.
Autoevolution's own year-by-year breakdown across this production span notes the R850C stayed remarkably consistent: 2000 carried forward "the same technical, visual, and performance specifications as the previous one without any changes," and the final 2001 model year likewise offered "the same package as the previous one... without any significant modifications whatsoever." Styling stayed genuinely distinctive throughout: a round headlight, a small wind deflector, a single seat set at a low riding position, a wide handlebar, two short exhausts with a silencer on each side, and three-spoke aluminum wheels — a look one autoevolution entry notes used "a lot of chrome" for a BMW, a deliberate departure from the brand's more understated styling tradition specifically to compete visually in the American-style cruiser segment. Twin 320mm front discs with 4-piston calipers and a single 276mm rear disc with a dual-piston caliper handled braking, shared directly with the larger-displacement R1200C.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1997-2001 R850C running the way it was built to.
