R1200C (1997-2004): The Cruiser Pierce Brosnan Rode Through Saigon, Handcuffed to Michelle Yeoh
James Bond Wiki's own account traces the R1200C's genuinely famous launch moment: unveiled to the motorcycling press at Tucson in June 1997, BMW "first released the R1200C with an advance promotional placement of the motorcycle" in that same year's Tomorrow Never Dies, with Pierce Brosnan's Bond and Michelle Yeoh's Wai Lin — handcuffed together — riding one through a high-speed chase in Ho Chi Minh City. Bike-urious's own retrospective is candid about what the R1200C genuinely was underneath the movie glamour: "this was primarily a styling exercise" for BMW, aimed squarely at catching "just a portion of the Harley/Cruiser craze in the US" market of the mid-1990s.
Power comes from an 1,170cc air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine, bored and stroked up from the 1,084cc R1100 unit (90mm x 70.5mm to 101mm x 73mm), delivering a claimed 61 hp through a 5-speed gearbox — genuinely modest output for the displacement, but Wind Burned Eyes' own account notes what the R1200C lacked in raw power "it makes up for in smooth, predictable torque," with a long wheelbase, low center of gravity, and the boxer's inherently flat engine profile combining for genuinely surprising nimbleness for a cruiser this size. Designer David Robb's cruiser-posture layout included a genuinely clever passenger seat that folds up into a rider backrest with three adjustable angles, changeable while riding.
The model spawned genuine variety across its 40,218-unit production run: standard, Classic, Avantgarde (introduced 2000, with less chrome and a graphite finish), Independent (badged "Phoenix" for the US market, introduced 2001 with a single seat and speedster-style windshield), Montauk (2003, with a beefier design and extended-rake front end), and the Troika sidecar variant. Wikipedia's own year-by-year changes confirm genuine mechanical evolution across this run: 2000 brought new color options, a black-finished engine, an upgraded adjustable hydraulic rear shock, and updated electronic ignition and fuel injection, while the final 2004 model year added dual ignition, integral ABS (where the brake pedal and lever, applied independently, actuate both front and rear brakes simultaneously), an improved transmission, and a no-cost passenger comfort seat upgrade. BMW's own then-president Herbert Diess cited the boxer engine's growing unsuitability to shifting market tastes, and the unavailability of a suitable replacement engine, as the primary reason production ended in late 2004. The smaller-displacement R850C sibling shared this same fundamental platform from 1997 through its own discontinuation around 2000-2001.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1996-2004 R1200C running the way it was built to.
