BMW R1150RT (2000-2005): The Full-Dress Boxer Tourer with a Six-Speed Gearbox and Linked ABS
The R1150RT is BMW’s full-dress touring bike, introduced in 2001 as the successor to the R1100RT. It kept the same basic platform with a bigger engine, more power, fully linked power-assisted ABS brakes, a revised front lighting system and a new six-speed gearbox with a tall overdrive sixth. BMW tried to make its full-dress tourers surprisingly agile, and the R1150RT is no exception. Standard equipment included panniers, an electrically adjustable screen and a centre stand, with heated grips, a top box and even a radio available as options. The seat is a two-piece, height-adjustable unit, and the bars can be adjusted. A police version, the R1150RT-P, had a single seat, dual batteries, lights, sirens, crash bars and a radio top box.
Power comes from a 1,130cc air/oil-cooled, SOHC boxer twin with four valves per cylinder, a 101mm bore, a 70.5mm stroke and an 11.3:1 compression ratio. Bosch Motronic fuel injection feeds it, and it has an electric start and shaft drive. BMW claims 95 hp at 7,250 rpm and about 98-100 Nm (72 lb-ft) of torque at 5,500 rpm, with more than 90 Nm available from 3,000 rpm to 6,500 rpm. Later bikes got dual ignition, with two spark plugs per cylinder, which owners report cured the older bikes’ tendency to surge. Fuel economy is about 45 mpg, and the tank gives a touring range of more than 400 km.
The front suspension is BMW’s Telelever with 135mm of travel, and the rear is a Paralever single-sided swingarm with 135mm of travel, a single shock and hydraulically adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. Brakes are dual 320mm front discs with four-piston calipers and a single 276mm rear disc with a two-piston caliper. Seat heights are adjustable at 805, 825 or 845mm, with an optional low seat that gives 780, 800 or 820mm.
The bike is about 85.4 inches (2,169mm) long and 37 inches (940mm) wide, with a 58.5-inch (1,486mm) wheelbase. The tank holds 25 litres (6.6 US gallons), and dry weight is about 255 kg (562 lbs).
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a BMW R1150RT running the way it was built to.
